For the 2021 academic year, there are as many as 1,456 open NEET PG seats after five rounds of admissions counselling. This information was provided in a written response to a question in the Lok Sabha about whether the seats had remained vacant despite using all permitted rounds of counselling, which was answered by Bharati Pravin Pawar, Minister of State for Health. Students lose interest in some pre- and paramedical specialisations due to a lack of employment options and financial security, which results in empty seats. In order to ensure that students are prepared for employment after receiving their degrees, the Ministry of Health is actively working to bring these seats under the definition of clinical. While several pre- and para-medical streams like Pharmacology, Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, and Microbiology are not preferred, clinical programmes continue to be a favourite among NEET PG aspirants. Unfortunately, neither of these is as appealing as they once were. In addition to pre- and paramedical PG seats in Pathology, Anatomy, Forensic Medicine, Preventive and Social Medicine, among others, Dr. B Srinivas, ADG (medical education), claims that other courses that grant students a diploma also do not draw a lot of interest. A clinical component must be added to the less popular PG seats in order to improve their appeal and change their classification from pre- or paramedical seats to clinical seats. He continues: The government and National Medical Commission (NMC) are actively moving in this direction, and perhaps, something will change in the next few years. Another option could be to spread awareness of the MD PhD programme in these specialisations, which offers students a 2-year employment confirmation as PhD scholars once they complete their PG degrees. Students will be more prepared to work as teachers and researchers once the course is over because of this, which will increase the appeal of PhDs in their chosen streams.
